Dear debaters, coaches and judges,
It is our honor to invite you to the
First Tournament of the 2009/2010 English Debate League,
which will be held in Košice, from Friday, November 20 to Sunday, November 22, 2009.
Please read on for specifics:
Format
All debates of the tournament shall be held in the World Schools format. For more information on the format, you may consult the resources of the WSDC or SDA. There shall be four preliminary rounds, two on the prepared motion, and two on impromptu motions. The top four teams after the preliminary rounds will advance to the semi-finals. Teams should consist of three members. Exceptions shall be made in special cases, for instance, if the team will represent their country at the World Schools Debating Championships.
Motion
The prepared motion for the tournament reads as follows:
This House believes that the state should create a DNA database of all citizens.
Venues
The tournament will take place at Gymnazium Šrobarova.
Accommodation shall be provided for teams and judges who do not live in Košice by debaters and judges living in Košice in their homes.
Getting Around in Košice
On arriving at the train station, take the alley pathway right of the tram and bus stop. As you cross the bridge, you enter the city center. Go on walking, past the dome. As you cross Moyzesova, you will be able to see Gymnázium Šrobárova across the street. It is a two-floor building with red and white walls.

Saturday, November 21, 2009:
8.00-8.30 – Breakfast at the school
8.30-11.30 – Round 2 (impromptu)
11.30-13.30 – Round 3 (prepared)
13.30-14.30 – Lunch at the school
14.30-16.30 – Round 4 (prepared)
16.30-19.00 – Semi-Final Round (impromptu)
19.00-20.00 – Dinner
Sunday, November 22, 2009:
8.30-9.30 – Breakfast
9.30-12.00 – Final Round and Award Ceremony
Dress code
Participants will not need to wear special attire. We trust their judgment that they will dress appropriately.
Fee
The registration fee for the tournament is set at 20 € per debater (i.e. 60 € per team) for those who will be willing to stay in the homes of debaters from Košice. For debaters who would rather stay at the school hostel the price is 40€ per debater. Judges do not pay the fee. There is also an option for observers to attend the tournament. Observers will be accommodated in the school hostel Werferova the price of 28€ per person. For observers who will not need accommodation the fee is set at 10€.
Team Caps
The capacity of accommodation is limited. Therefore, team caps need to apply. For the general team cap, the total amount of teams who apply for accommodation should not exceed 10. The number of judges shall also be capped, not to exceed the maximum number of needed judges. Judges will be ordered based on their level of accreditation. Judges will be notified of their status by the time registration closes.
Deadlines and Payment
As the capacity of the accommodation is limited, deadlines for registration will apply as well. The deadline for registration is November 15. By this date, all registration fees should be paid to account no. 2665455121/1100 (Tatrabanka). In the case of payments from the Czech Republic, registration fees can be paid to account no. 211033064/0300 (ČSOB CZ). After this date, the registration fee will not be returned to debaters, in case no substitute for them is found.
